COELLEIRA ISLAND

It is located in front of the tip “ do Embarcadoiro” with a distance over 500 m from the shore. It has got form of irregular trapeze with a extension about 26 ha and a maximum altitude over 82 mt where we can see a lighthouse. The part of the north to the northwest is steepness and the south lower. San Antonio’s tip is found to the east with small islands and following with some entrances to the sea. The island of Carballiño and the Coelleira are situated together. There, we only are able to see these islands in low tide. Then, we can observe the islands of “Percebosa” or “Percebellosa”. The islands of “Carabelas” appears to the west and we get to see the tip of “Cruz de Liñeira” to the south. We can arrive to the island across the “Portiño” located to the southwest and across the “Liñeiro” to the est.

Besides the rabbits that gave it the name we have to highligh the great ornithological interest of the island. In this island are raised clearly gulls and the common “arao”. It is also considered as passing area of migratory birds that fly toward Africa from Iceland, Greenland and the north of Europe. We are able to count nearly more than 15.000 nests of 25 differents species of gulls. This island was an inhabited region and a harvest land. For that, the highlight-keeper and some families of farmers lived here. The island was uninhabited since that the last lighthouse-keeper had left it no many years ago.

It’s said that the island had excellents conditions for the agriculture. There are people who remind the excellent crop of wheat which growed until nowaday and the exceptional whiteness of its flour. Among the interesting flora is necessary to highlight as curiosity the denominated “grass of the fertility”.
